Big Daddy Embarrasses his Family of Origin
When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap.
~Cynthia Heimel, "Lower Manhattan Survival Tactics"
The fearless co-leader of the "off color" family is "Big Daddy."
"Big Daddy and I have been married now for almost 18 years. I always told people in the congregation I served that "he is a bit Off-color", meaning he likes to tell a dirty joke or two or say things he shouldn't. I also told them, "I'm always a bit nervous because I never know what may come out of his mouth or where he might drop his pants." Modesty is not his strong suit and
if he can embarrass you, he will.
Last summer, while at the beach the kids and their friends were always teasing him about getting a speedo to wear to the beach. One morning while they were still sleeping, he goes into the bedroom and
finds one of my older bathing suites, a one piece black one for the slenderizing effect and I must admit, it did help pull in his stomach tumor.
He wakes the kids up wearing this one piece and asks if they want to go walk the beach with them.
We all had a good laugh that morning!!
Well, since "Big Daddy" got a laugh with that one,
shortly after our beach vacation we went on a family vacation with his mom, two sisters and their spouses and children and his brother and his wife. This was all funded by the generosity of his mom, we call her "mama Dee".
"Mama Dee" made arrangements for us to all go to the mountains for three days. She booked rooms in this wonderful mountain resort that had game rooms for the children, a golf course for the golfers, pools and a lazy river where you could sit on an inner tube and float around the pool.
Now what you might need to know about my husband'S family is even though they love to get together and laugh and play, there are a few differences in them as siblings. Some of them are more concerned about appearances than others and to some they are really important.
So here we are at this "foo foo" resort and the leader of the
"off color" family cannot contain himself.
Thank God, I was hiking in the mountains that day. I think if I had been witness to what happened, I'm sure I would have died from embarrassment.
So "Big Daddy's family," all of them but me are at the pool.
"Big Daddy" goes to the room and changes to get in the pool and wraps a towel around his waist. He heads on down to the pool to meet up with the rest of the family.
The pool is crowded with lots of guests on this partiCular day so "Big Daddy" yells to make sure his family is looking. Before they know what has hit them,
"Big Daddy" drops his towel and gets on an inner tube and begins floating around the pool in a black one piece bathing suit with a banana stuck in a strategic place.
His family are laughing but also dying of embarrassment.
My children are getting out of the pool and hiding
and
the rest of the guests are staring and pulling their children out of the pool.
He is yelling at the family in a thick accent like he is from another country.
People are staring over their balconies
at this strange man in a black one piece woman's swimsuit.
Every so often to remind his family to stay on the light side of life and
not worry about what people think, "Big Daddy" will take a picture of himself in a crazy outfit and mail it to them.
No Big Daddy is not a cross dresser....he just loves to be the center of attention and will do
whatever it takes to be just that...
even if it means he wears a
woman's suit to the pool to embarrass his family.
Hey want to go on vacation with us!
I promise you there is never a dull moment
with
"Big Daddy and the off color family".
This is a slice of his Christmas Card to his family.
I can't show you the whole picture because he
had mistletoe pinned in strategic location.
The card said:
Merry Christmas!!
Meet Me Under the Mistletoe!
Love Big Daddy
Happy Saturday!
Go ahead feel a bit sorry for me!
Sometimes even after 18 years, he embarrasses me!!!!
hugs to all of you!!
Send some back to me cause now you have an understanding of
who I live with!!!

Pam, but I would say Big Daddy is not the only one in the family embarrasing another family member after watching your daughter's alien video! Ha Ha It was fantastic! Growing up my dad was the embarrasing kind and I must say, I wouldn't have it any other way. We didn't have a lot, but we laughed a lot! {{{HUGS}}} to you. Have a great Saturday.
you are so right.....we often call her the mini-me version of big daddy. My son is a bit more reserved like me.
Thanks for sharing these moments! Karima from

ROFL!!! OMG!! He's hilarious...oh poor you! But he's hilarious!! Lots of hugs and chocolate to you Pleemiller. You're a brave woman and your husband certainly is a brave man! You know? my dad is like that. While he's from a different era and has different tactics, he still makes these off the cuff remarks and outlandish jokes just to get people away from being staid and sorry. I understand Big Daddy. That mountain resort sounds wonderful by the way. LOL! The visual I got from your story is going to keep me chuckling for a long time! Thanks for sharing this. I have to get my husband to read it too!
Anne
you never know what will happen next and there is always a laugh to be had...sometimes....he's just
"inappropriate" but I love him anyway!!!
I've been married 18 years too. My dh seems to embarrass me a bit less. So funny tho!
I'm glad you don't have to live through the antics...I've come to like the laughter and I'm getting so used to it it rarely bothers me anymore. I've just learned to go off and hike when we are in a large crowd.
Hahah that is awesome! I need to spend more time being my old Kookie self. I had more fun that way. Thank you for your post and to "Big Daddy" for remaining true to his fun side :D
Ha ha that is funny (I'm falling out of my chair laughing) and sounds like my brother-in-law.
LACE and Terri...
funny to you!!!! wouldn't you love to just come and watch big daddy in action...it is more fun when you don't know him...
