"Summer Sneaking......"

“Belly tops, flip flops
Lemonade, in the shade
Blue skies, hot guys,
Late nights water fights,
Ice creams, sweet dreams,
Bathing suits, shooting hoops,
Party time, schools out,
Sleeping in,sneaking out
Summer’s coming…”
Unknown

I feel sorry for our children sometimes...just sometimes.
They can't get away with anything.
Yesterday was the first day of their summer vacation.
Madi spent Sunday at an amusement park and then the night with her friend hannatard.  She wasn't home on Monday morning.
B. was home.
For the past few day, B. being a 16 year old with his newly acquired learning permit, persistently tried to convince me that
it was fine for him to drive without a licensed driver in the car....simply because
"all the other parents were letting their kids do it."
He tried it all,
"you don't trust me"
"I am a good driver"
"so and so and so and so are doing it."

I continued to tune him out and Big Daddy and I continued to explicitly explain to him the issues on the plate---
you are not licenced to drive alone,
you aren't insured to drive alone
and
the big one
if you hit someone or someone hits you...
"Insurance will not pay for it"
Enough said....
I thought so.

Monday as I sit down at my desk, I get a phone call from persistent son, B.   "Mom, what are you doing?"
"working'
"Hey mom, you want me to pick Madi up from hannatards? I'll be careful."
"No!", I say...you are not to drive without an adult with a licence in the car!!!! I am not going to do this every day this summer.  Do not ask me this again! You will not drive alone until October when you get your license."
He responds, "Okay mom, see you later.  I love you."

An hour later, my office phone rings.  It's Big Daddy, who happened to have some extra time in his day and had decided to run home for an hour or so.
"Hey hon, I just got home.  Surprise, Surprise, I'm home but guess who is not and guess whose car is gone."

Hum.....did you not just see my conversation with B an hour earlier.
Big Daddy and I discuss our options.  I'm usually the easy, but I was pretty "P.O.ed".  I say, "well you know what I want to do.  I want to tell him he will not be going to the beach next week with J and J.
Big Daddy, "I know you think this is a big deal, but not that big as long as he gets home safe.  That's too drastic."
(so B. you better hug your daddy tonight--
he is the reason you get to go!)

I sent B. a text telling him to call me so I can give him some chores to earn money for his trip.
It takes a few minute, probably because he had to pull over so I wouldn't hear him driving or hear the radio."
"Hey mom, you wanted something."
I say, "Yes, what are you doing?"

silence

Then, "well you know where I'm at mom, in my car."
I start in...
"didn't I tell you?"
"yes mom but I didn't listen"
"Where did you go?"
"J and T didn't have a ride home from D's house, so I went to get them and take them home (JT and D are his close friends).

I quietly said, "Well I hope you enjoyed that drive because it is the last you'll be driving for a month.  Take the car home and give the keys to Big Daddy."

We figure he drove by and saw Big Daddy's car in front of our house and knew he was busted.

Growing up must be hard!
Making decisions that involve
fun vs responsible
are sometimes tough...
So B. while your still young,
never fear,
Mom and Dad
the sneakers...
will take care of you!
Don't try it again!!!!! your sure to be busted!!!

of course we still love you.....
but
you forget
we were teens once and
we've already done what you are gonna try....
and
you never know who will be home early.

Happy Summer B and M
and
all....

Did any of you ever sneak and drive?
Did you get caught?
come on
dont' be a secret keeper,
share a story or two
I didn't but Big Daddy did...

Happy Tuesday!!!
and
Hugs...

though I will admit,
some of the most fun things in life
come from the sneak!!!! Just don't tell my son!!!

Ooohh goodness, I can SO see this happening with my son. He's SUCH a sneak! You really kept your head didn't you? I can't imagine what I would've done. I think you handled it wonderfully.

Oh, I'm so not ready for teenagers. I skipped school to be with my boyfriend (now my hubby) and was caught. My older sister saw us at a gas station and asked my Mom if I was off school for the day. Don't tell my kids, Please.

ahhh, When I was a new driver my mom was always making me do errands...go to the store, return these movies, pick up your sisters....
One day I had to pick up my younger sister and I REALLY didn't want to so on the way home when she asked if she could drive on the back country road I said sure (I won't tell you how old she was). Needless to say, she wrecked the car, both of us were fine and I took the blame until my 21st birthday dinner about 5 years later after too many birthday toasts.....
I can see now that it was a serious error in judgment and we are both very lucky but at the time I just remember thinking "ya mom, I'm sorry but I believe I mentioned I didn't want to pick her up" Obviously I did NOT say this out loud.... ahhhh teenagers are horrible creatures sometimes.
